On the Precipice of Distinction
State officials temporarily shut off pumps that supply water to 25 million Californians. Endangered Delta smelt, which are on the precipice of distinction, are swimming in the path of pumps in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Until the fish move on, state water operators and the people they supply are in a bind. Officials hope to resume operating the pumps within a week.[NPR]
